Your study
Your computer—visualized.
Your computer. You never lose control of your data, and you are never locked out of your own study. Your study is an interface that stays on your computer, and it works disconnected from Fink's servers or completely offline (except for the Communicator and the Catalogue).
The room
Why?
The Study is built for the problem solver. It makes visualizing your data across your hardware simple and intuitive. It also makes it incredibly intuitive to draw out artificial intelligence machines.
Every file is a book, as thick as the file is big. E opens the class; Enter opens the book in its own app.
What's due, one slip each, late in red. Type dates as you say them: fri, +3. Calendars from Canvas, Google or Outlook pin straight on.
Sit down and the lamp lights and the clock starts, even while you work in another window. The minutes are yours alone.
Spaced flash cards, today's first. Anki and Quizlet exports drop right in. Notes per class, in a plain file.
One sheet per class: books, links, deadlines, cards, notes, and the Fink games that practise it.
A pinboard, a clock with your week beneath it, and a window lit for the hour on your computer.
Read it where it lies
Click a paper at the desk and its pages come up in the room: a PDF, a text file, a picture. Scroll to read on. The desk is a desktop, not a list of things to open somewhere else.
The light of the hour
Hang windows on any wall. The sun comes through them and lies on the floor where it would, moving round the room through the day; set the hour yourself if you would rather work at dusk. At night the lamps make pools.
Everything is a file
Everything you put in the study is a file.
Point at anything in the room to see what it is in your study folder, and what it is for.
Also in the study, but not in these pictures
Machines
A machine.
- A syllabus goes in. A game comes out.
- Open it up.
- Inside: steps its owner set, and the prompt it asks a model.
- It stands in your study. Walk up and hand it a paper.
The Catalogue
What a study can have.
Numbered pieces for the room: machines and fittings, the house's free and makers' priced in lead. Every study has a lectern with the book on it, and every piece in the book was read by the house before it got its number.
It stays on your device
Three things the study never does.
The study is a folder on the machine the city runs on, and nothing else. On a Mac it is in the app's own folder under Application Support, and O at the desk opens it in Finder.
Nothing in it is sent anywhere.
No study script has a way to reach the network or Fink's ledger, and a test on the server greps them to keep it so. The server's list of places never names the study.
Nobody can come in, and you can't be seen.
Walking in closes the presence socket. There are no strangers in your study, nobody sees you go in, and chat says it is outside. Y takes you in from anywhere in the city, and back out to exactly where you stood.
Nothing in it is scored.
Sitting at the desk keeps minutes for you to see, and they never reach your record. Practise in Fink's games for XP; a class's page says where.
Bring your things in
Your study is just a folder on your computer.
Every shelf, card and due date is an ordinary file you can open, back up, or hand to any app or AI. Nothing is locked inside Fink.
Drop your things in
Drop files on the window while you face a bookcase. Drop a whole folder, or the .zip Canvas gives you when you download a course's files, and it becomes a bookcase of its own.
AI helpers need no key of Fink's
Because the study is files, the helper you already use can work on it: point Claude Code, or anything that reads a folder, at the study and it can read the classes, add cards, pin deadlines, or write a summary into a class's notes. A note in the folder tells it the format. Fink itself calls no model here.
Build the room yourself
- BArrange: aim and E to pick something up, walk, E to set it down. R turns it a quarter.
- NAdd a bookcase (a new class), an armchair, a floor lamp, a plant, a rug, a globe, a table, a sofa, a radio, a cabinet, a banner or a wall clock.
- KThe walls' colour. F the floor: oak, walnut, ash, or black and white tiles. C a piece's colour.
- PA screen on the wall, or a monitor on a stand, showing any window on your Mac; E up close hands it the mouse and the keys.
